The harvest season beckons India. Lohri festival celebrates the bonfire. This festival is celebrated on winter solstice day as it signifies the beginning of the end of winter season. Why Is Lohri Festival Celebrated. ?
The main reason for Lohri's celebration is taken from the tale of Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was a Muslim highway robber who lived in Punjab during Akbar’ reign . Besides robbery, he also rescued Hindu girls which were being forcibly sold in slave market. He helped the girls in getting married to Hindu boys by performing all the important rituals by himself and even provided them with dowries. Thereby, though a robber, he became a hero of Punjab. So Lohri songs are recited to express gratitude to Dulla Bhatti.
Moreover, Lohri commemorates the passing of winter solstice.
